Summer vacations are in full swing and travelers are packing up the first aid kit in their suitcase. The big question is what should they bring to help with all scrapes, bug bites and irritated skin? The Vitamin Shoppe's Homeopathic Expert, Carrie Plumley, has some suggestions for travelers this summer.
"Homeopathic products are great for everyone; parents giving them to their children, mature adults, and weekend warriors looking for natural solutions." said Plumley. "The FDA regulates these products and requires that Homeopathic drugs meet specific standards for strength, quality and purity."
Homeopathic drugs act on the principal that an illness can be treated by a substance capable of producing similar symptoms to those suffered by the patient. However, the amount included is small which reduces the possibility of any interference with other herbal, medicinal or nutraceutical products.
"Another great benefit is you don't need water to take them, they dissolve under the tongue, making them ideal for travel or every day trips to the park," added Plumley.
"The best advice is to take products at the onset of illness, don't wait," continued Plumley. She suggests the following homeopathic remedies for regular summer ailments.
Overexposure to the sun often happens quickly when we are not looking and will cause irritated skin. Remember to use the organic sunscreen and bring along the following products just in case:
— Calendula lotion — spreads easily, is soothing and moisturizing, plus it helps to speed healing.
-- Apis mellifica -- for pink/stinging burning skin/allergies/insect bites -- Belladonna -- local infections with inflammation, acute sudden fever
The good weather also brings the bugs out. For insect bites carry Ledum palustre which helps to get rid of pain and lessen swelling.
Injuries
— Arnica montana gel — used on unbroken skin, it helps prevent bruising and absorbs quickly. This is good for swelling and sore muscles.
— Arnica montana pellets — taken internally, it promotes healing and is great for overall systemic soreness from physical overexertion.
— Calendula ointment — disinfectant, helpful for scrapes, minor wounds, blisters and even diapers rashes. Like Arnica gel, but for when the skin is broken.
— Ruta graveolens — helps with deep aching pain, ligament injury, sprains/strains
Travelling -- Tabacum -- helps relieve motion sickness -- Lycopodium -- alleviates indigestion, reduces bloating -- Nux vomica -- eases sensitivity and irritability -- Arnicare Arthritis -- for joint pain that flares due to extra activity
"A lot of these items come in small, easy-to-use packaging which really helps save some room in your backpack or suitcase," said Plumley.
